Daniel S. Block brings a rare blend of courtroom savvy and builder energy to IP Copilot. A director in Sterne Kessler’s Electronics Practice Group, Dan specializes in complex patent litigation in federal courts and at the International Trade Commission and has managed more than 100 post‑grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. His experience keeps our product tightly aligned with the realities of high‑stakes IP work.
Beyond litigation, Dan leads Sterne Kessler’s AI initiatives—including the firm’s internal R&D arm, Sterne Kessler Labs, which designs and deploys legal‑AI tools used across the patent pipeline. He helped shape the firm’s Patent Assist AI drafting solution, an in‑house system built by the firm’s attorneys and patent agents to generate high‑quality specification text with rigorous security and compliance guardrails.
Dan’s roots as a software developer show up in how he thinks and builds. Outside of his legal practice he reverse‑engineers hardware and designs custom PCBs for IoT projects—hands‑on problem solving that mirrors our own culture of iteration. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from RIT and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School. He’s also been recognized among Patexia’s “100 Best Performing Attorneys Representing Patent Owners” at the PTAB.
How Dan helps IP Copilot
- Product realism, faster outcomes. As a design‑partner stakeholder, Dan champions features that compress prior‑art work from days to minutes and make results usable at the point of need. Our joint case study highlights collaborative sprints that delivered SSO, progress indicators, billing webhooks, and a scoring model for “killer” art—practical touches that reflect how litigators actually work.
- AI guardrails that stand up in court. Drawing on Sterne Kessler’s in‑house development approach, Dan advises on security, data segregation, and workflow choices (e.g., focusing generation on description rather than claims) to minimize enforceability risk while maximizing quality—principles we bake directly into IP Copilot.
- Improve results. Dan’s PTAB track record and hands‑on engineering background help us pressure‑test features for evidence‑of‑use, invalidity, and drafting scenarios—and communicate value to discerning Am Law and Fortune‑500 teams.
With Dan on our Advisory Board, IP Copilot gains an advisor who bridges advocate and architect: a litigator fluent in code, and a builder who knows where AI meaningfully moves the needle for patent professionals. That perspective keeps us focused on what matters most—speed, precision, and outcomes.
